MDIA 1020: Character Caricature (25pts)

This is my first time drawing caricatures and overall I think I did alright! That is, if you don't compare them to who they are supposed to look like. The first one is of John Lasseter, the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios. The second is of Ellen DeGeneres, our favorite television host. Mr. Lasseter is showing off one of his 1,000 Hawaiian T-shirts (can you guess which one it is??) and Ellen is dancing like she always does. Hope you like them!

MDIA 1020: Everyone Needs A Sidekick (25pts)

My sidekick would make up for what I lacked in physical strength. Maybe even have super strength. One of my powers would be an affinity over water and therefore he could in turn have one over fire. He can control and make fire out of the energy floating around in the air/space. He can super heat things with his mind, doesn’t need physical contact. In terms of personality, it could play into the associated short temper that someone with a power over fire would have. Yet he would likely have to be the brains of the operation since I tend to get myself into trouble often. His powers could include hypnotism; the way people get entranced by a flame or fire. If he can get people to make direct eye contact, he can make them see what he wants them to or spill their deepest darkest secrets. As a team we would sometimes bicker but more often than not we would exchange witty banter and always have each others backs.

MDIA 1020: Award Winning Structure (50pts)

I watched Sense And Sensibility (1995) which won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Writing (Adapted Screen play). The story centers around two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who after the death of their father have to struggle between marrying for love or marrying for convenience. While trying to take care of her family’s finances and becoming acquainted with the wife of her haf-brother, the eldest of the sisters, Elinor, is introduced to Edward Ferrars.
They fall in love, but due to the disapproval of his family and a previous engagement, they are separated. Later on, Marianne rejects the obvious affections of the Colonel Brandon while chasing after a John Willoughby. She is eventually heartbroken upon the realization that because of Mr. Willoughby’s previous actions, his family disowns him and he decides of leave Marianne for a woman of high standing and wealthy family. She later turns to the Colonel and he helps her recover and wins her heart. During which time we discover that Mr. Ferrars has left his family and due to the change of heart of his intended, is no longer engaged. He happily comes looking to Elinor for forgiveness and are reunited.

In the instance of Elinor, the hamartia is that her character is too timid and accepting. She worries about others before herself and therefor allows her own happiness to slip away without the slightest action from her. She quietly suffers while being pulled and tugged by the troubles of her sister and family. The peripeteia in her storyline is the moment when after having fallen in love with Mr. Edward Ferrars, she and her family are suddenly moved to her uncle’s cottage because of their lack of money. She is separated from Ferrars and as a result, his family takes the opportunity to make it as difficult as possible for the two to reunite. However, despite his family’s meddling, she had some understanding of his affections and therefore her anagnorisis moment was finding out that he had already been secretly engaged for several years.

As for Marianne, her hamartia is that she was too ignorant of what love really meant and held too high of standards for it. She had a strong opinion of what she wanted in a husband and then threw her whole self and heart into attaining it. Which inevitably led to a broken heart as well as a newfound maturity and a deeper-rooted love. Marianne’s peripeteia was when Willoughby had to leave so suddenly and without a reason. We later find out it was because he had left a girl pregnant and abandoned her. A fact his family found out about and disowned him for and so he fled. Her anagnorisis was when she found out that although Willoughby loved her, he prioritized his financial well being above his love for her. She had held on to the idea and promise of their love that she was utterly distraught to find out how far he was willing to go for her.

MDIA 1020: Your Harmatia is Showing (25pts)

In my story, a girl fresh out of college and looking for a job must deal with the death of her father and her stepmother after a horrible car accident. Her parents had divorced when she was young leaving her with her mother and her father had gone on to make his own family creating resentment and a rift between him and the protagonist. She now has to come to terms with her confused feelings toward her father while taking in her now orphaned half-brother while the government decides who takes custody over the boy. She had left her hometown to get away from her problems but now memories, feelings and old friends are starting to all rush back into her life.

In this story, the protagonist’s tragic flaw is that she has a tendency to run away from her feelings and avoid the issue. And while she tries to make close connections with people, she some how always manages to put up walls around her. Her past has scared her and as a result has left her with low self-esteem and a need to prove her capable of success and independence. This is her way of making her loneliness into a personal vendetta to show that she doesn't need anyone to be happy.

The turning point comes when her father dies and she has to take in her younger brother. She had only ever been in charge of herself and now she needs to take care of a child who may or may not be taken away from her by the end of the summer. Struggling with the loss of a father she loved but couldn’t open up to, she is back at home after being away an entire year. Now everywhere she goes and everyone she sees brings back old pains and problems. Not to mention that her father’s several attempts to reconnect in the past can be connected to practically every spot in town.

The Anagnorisis in the story is when she realizes that she never let her father in for fear of him leaving again. She goes through an emotional break down as she blames him for doing just that, leaving her again but come to terms with the fact that he never wanted to, then or now. He continually tried to be a part of her life in the past but she was the one who forced him out. This time, he left someone behind, a bit of him that she now sees as a way to redeem her past failures. After an entire summer with her brother, she as learned a lot about their father and about how much the three are alike. She is unwilling to give up her last connection and only sibling.

A person’s dream is something that can give one wonder and happiness by the simple thought of it and existence. It is something that you need to hold on tightly to and never let out of your sight because it can so easily float away and become unreachable if you don’t keep it close.

· The cold is a thorn on a rose

The cold can be annoying and uncomfortable, but it is only an element for what comes with it. It promises winter and while some don’t necessarily like this season, it can bring such beauty and joy. It means snowball fights, snowmen, Christmas, and warm fires and happy moments. Cold is only part of the package and something very manageable in comparison.

· My family are the roots and branches of my tree

My family gives me support and nourishment. They are my beginnings and history and have made me who I am today. They keep me standing up, never let me fall. They are the ones that encourage me to reach for the sky and are always close by.

· Friends are the flowers of my garden

Friends are beautiful and make life colorful and worth the hard work. They come and go, but they can come back too. And even if they don’t, new ones grow in their place. They make the dreary landscape of life vibrant and always manage to bring a smile to my face.

· Love is an unfulfilled promise
Love is something you are told about as a child and what you look forward to growing up. You meet people and think you might have found it but it slips away. But you keep looking, keep waiting thinking that eventually it will find you. You keep waiting for the day when it is fulfilled.
